Monthly paper
The publication called Kääntäjä-översättaren is produced for members of the Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters, but non-members may subscribe as well. The periodical is also distributed as a source of information to major clients and co-operation partners using translators' and interpreters' services, and to translators' and interpreters' organisations in other countries. In addition, each university department of translation studies in Finland is sent several copies of every issue.
Kääntäjä-översättaren has been published without a break since 1970. It is currently released ten times a year, in issues eight or twelve pages long. The issue for September is a more comprehensive theme issue, and a greater number of copies are printed.
The Association's chairperson serves as Kääntäjä-översättaren's editor-in-chief. The editorial board comprises the eight people acting as the information offices of the Association's Board, of the Association's sections and of the Association's local chapters, and also includes the periodical's layout service and editorial assistant (usually the Association's office manager/executive secretary).
Kääntäjä-översättaren is made up of a leader and the following regular columns:
- Theory and Practice
- Announcements by the Association's sections and local chapters-invitations to meetings
- Forthcoming education and training events
- A column on correct Finnish usage
- A column for discussion of topical issues.
- Public Administration
Besides the regular columns, Kääntäjä-översättaren prints both commissioned and unsolicited articles on subjects of professional interest, reports of meetings and negotiations, and interviews. Information about topical issues - such as legislative amendments affecting the profession - is provided as needed. Editing of the periodical is done on a voluntary basis; the Association's funds are insufficient to pay a fee for written or pictorial material. Only the editorial assistant and the layout service are paid for their work.
The primary purpose of Kääntäjä-översättaren is to strengthen the professional identity of the Association's membership. With this in mind, working translators and interpreters are given as much information and support as possible. Kääntäjä-översättaren seeks to promote a sense of solidarity and to provide a forum for discussion. It also acts as a channel from translators to the authorities and to clients.
Since 1996, English summaries of the central articles are included with Kääntäjä-översättaren issues that are posted abroad.
